Croatia and Turkey share the opening spoils

On Monday, Ante Čačić's men hosted Turkey national team at Maksimir Stadium, behind closed doors due to FIFA sanctions, and embarked on a journey towards 2018 World Cup in Russia.

Turkey, missing a couple of famous names, threatened L. Kalinić in the early minutes through youngster Mor and midfielder Yokuslu, but the Vatreni then started to control the game.

Ten minutes gone, Mandžukić hit the bar from close range, and Pjaca sent the follow-up to high, while new Croatia captain Modrić then tried a shot. In 22nd minute, Pjaca header also landed on the bar, and another ten minutes later woodwork saved Turkey for a third time, following Perišić's strike from the edge of the box.

Nonetheless, Croatia found the net in 44th minute, when Modrić was fouled, and Rakitić converted the penalty. Into added time, however, Calhanoglu scored from the free kick - with some help from Croatian wall - and equalized.

At the beginning of the second half, Turkish striker Tosun tested Croatia goalie, and in the new wave of Croatian attacks Pjaca's excellent header was saved by impressive Babacan.

Vida also tried a header in the closing minutes, and Badelj found a way through opponent's defence in added time, but could not find a way past Turkish goalkeeper - thus leaving both teams with a point in hand.

Interestingly, the remaining two matches in Group I also ended in 1:1 draws - Ukraine hosting Iceland, and debutants Kosovo visiting Finland. Croatia continues its qualifying campaign on 6 October at Kosovo and on 9 October at Finland.
