Croatia international played a significant role in a spectacular Champions League final in Cardiff, with Real Madrid becoming the first team to retain this title.
Defending champions Real Madrid defeated Juventus 4:1 to win two consecutive Champions League titles. Luka Modrić and Mario Mandžukić were in their respective starting lineups, while Mateo Kovačić took his place among the reserves. Marko Pjaca of Juventus was missing due to knee injury.
Real Madrid took the lead on 20 minutes through Ronaldo, while Mandžukić scored an overhead stunner to equalize just seven minutes later. In the second half, Casemiro, Ronaldo, and Asensio secured the 4:1 Real Madrid win, with Modrić assisting Ronaldo on 64 minutes.
Modrić becomes the first Croatian footballer with three Champions League titles, and Kovačić managed to win two in his first two seasons with Real Madrid.
Meanwhile, Mandžukić scored one of the most memorable goals in Champions League finals and becomes the first Croatian footballer who scored in two different finals. Moreover, he is only the third player who managed to score in European Cup/Champions League finals for two different clubs (Bayern and Juventus).
