Croatia head coach Zlatko Dalić and captain Luka Modrić held a press conference on the eve of the home encounter with Greece.
On Thursday, Croatia hosts Greece in the first leg of FIFA World Cup play-offs. Head coach Zlatko Dalić has to decide whether to include Mario Mandžukić in the starting lineup, with Milan Badelj missing through injury.
"Mandžukić wants to play, but we'll see. This is only the first half of the tie, we have to visit Greece in three days' time, and we do not need to force him. If he's ready, he will play. I have decided how to replace Badelj, but I'll keep that to myself. Croatia has enough quality players. There is no need to be nervous or rush, seeking to score. We have to stay calm, patient, and smart, search for opportunities on both wings. I have presented my players with ideas, and we have to avoid pressure", says Dalić.
"I do not worry about head-to-head record or statistics. What is important is that we are ready for tomorrow's match, and we have to win regardless of the opponent. A historic match awaits us, and we're proud to have a full crowd to back us. This really means a lot to us. Our supporters have to stay patient as well, yet we'll do everything to win. The stakes are high, Croatia has quality and has to present it on the pitch", he added.
Croatia captain Luka Modrić shares similar views.
"We are in for a tough fight. Croatia has to stay patient, just as we did in Ukraine. We'll create some chances, and then we have to focused to make the most of them. The ideal outcome would be a victory without conceding, since the encounters with Greece usually do not provide many goals, and I hope Croatia will do the scoring tomorrow. I believe in a positive outcome, but there is still the return leg to be played. However, it is always easier to play against less defensive teams. This way, quick passing is necessary, and to create space in one-on-one situations. I try to do my best for the team, and I must not let any provocation disrupt my rhythm", he said.
"Major Greek quality is a compact team, even though their clubs prove how good they are as individuals. Some of them will get special attention, but the key remains to reach the World Cup, where we belong. Now we have to confirm that on the pitch. The pressure will not distract us, the team spirit is high, and I believe in a quality performance. Our supporters will give us extra motivation and we can't wait for the kick-off", concluded Modrić.
