Four years ago in Qatar, Kristijan Jakić made a one-minute appearance in the third-place match—a minute he will remember for the rest of his life. At the first press conference in Alexandria, he answered questions alongside Igor Matanović.

On the importance of faith...

“Faith means everything to me. It has been a part of my life since birth. We are a country where Catholicism is deeply rooted, and faith is a guiding path in our lives. The entire national team shares that belief, and it gives us strength at major tournaments, as well as throughout our lives.”

On the journey and first impressions of Alexandria...

“We’re a bit more rested than you because we were able to sleep more on the charter flight. We’re still not completely adjusted—the time difference affects us, and we’re a little sleepy. The neighborhood where the hotel is located is quiet. The food is the same as back home, thanks to our chef Tomica. We received a very warm welcome.”

On the playing time he expects...

“That minute in Qatar was the highlight of my career, the most beautiful moment of my life. I’d be lying if I said I don’t hope to play. I’ll try to give everything I have. If I get even a few minutes, I’ll be more than satisfied. I’ve already had my opportunity, so it’s not like I’m expecting too much.”

On England...

“They are a great football nation with a rich tradition. The Premier League is the best league in the world, and there’s a reason for that. I was surprised by their squad selection because some players are missing, but that only shows the depth of their quality. This World Cup will be a huge motivation for them because they didn’t achieve the result they expected at the last tournament. We expect them to be highly motivated, but we know how to handle opponents like that.”

On possible interruptions due to storms...

“It’s difficult for us to comment on that. We don’t control the weather. There have already been many changes before the World Cup. If we can deal with small issues, we’ll also have to adapt to bigger things like this. It shouldn’t create major problems.”

On crossword puzzles...

“As far as crossword puzzles are concerned, Joško is still a beginner. I finish mine before he even starts his.”

On Alexandria...

“As you know, we only arrived yesterday and haven’t even left the hotel yet. Today is just our first day here, but we’ll certainly see more of the city in the coming days. We’ll explore what there is to visit. However, we’re here because of football—that’s our focus, not sightseeing or going to restaurants. After the World Cup, we can stay longer if we want. Right now is not the time for that.”

On the World Cup...

“This is my second major tournament, and everything Igor is talking about, I already experienced in Qatar. I’m older now, more mature, and I control my emotions better. Still, you can definitely feel a certain tension.”

On football culture in the United States...

“I’m glad football is becoming increasingly popular in America because it’s the most beautiful sport in the world. You’ve started to experience its magic and emotions as well. I’m happy to see it growing and improving in quality. Many big names are coming here to play, and I hope the sport continues to develop. Maybe one day I’ll come here too.”
