Petar Sučić is experiencing the best moments of his career. After a fantastic season with Inter, he made his debut at the World Cup and delivered a strong performance in the opening match against England.

He began by commenting on his ability to adapt to the highest levels of football:

“We had a successful season, but I’d rather not talk about Inter right now. Adapting has never been a problem for me, and I’ve changed environments quite a few times. You always want more, you want to improve, and you have to be ready when the opportunity comes.”

On the lessons learned from the defeat against England...

“Every match is a valuable experience, and there’s always a lot to learn from it. But I don’t like focusing on the negatives. I prefer to take the positives and either correct or forget the negatives. We saw that we can play a very good match against England, apart from those set pieces, which we’ve been working on for days. We were the better team for most of the first half. It’s not easy to come back into a game three times, but the positive thing is that we’re really good and capable of competing with anyone.”

On the chemistry he has with Martin Baturina...

“We’ve been playing together for two and a half years in both the national team and Dinamo, and we’ve been roommates the whole time. We know each other’s habits, how we behave, how we prepare, so on the pitch I don’t even need to look at him to know everything, and it’s the same for him with me. We work extremely well together, and we’ve shown that.”

On his excellent physical condition...

“We all do the same work, haha... At this level there’s no more individual training; you prepare as a team. But I did the work I needed to do at the right time. When I was younger, I trained individually a lot. Now I can see it was worth it, and these days I don’t do anything extra.”

On Luka Modrić’s 200th appearance for Croatia...

“It’s difficult to reach that level, and even harder to stay there. Just imagine what he has achieved by maintaining that level for so long and reaching 200 appearances.”

On the differences between club football and the national team...

“There is a difference, especially when you play abroad—you’re a foreigner. With the national team, you’re among your own people and you spend the whole day together. At the club, you finish training and go home. Here we play table tennis, darts, video games, watch matches together. That’s how you build relationships and stronger connections, and it’s easier to create a good atmosphere than at a club.”
