Following the opening defeat to England, Croatia achieved its objective in Toronto and returns to its base camp in Alexandria with three points, keeping its hopes of advancing to the knockout stage alive.
The first half produced few notable chances, with only Baturina’s effort shortly before halftime standing out. However, Croatia improved significantly after the break and was rewarded in the 54th minute. Marco Pašalić and provider Stanišić combined on the right flank, delivering a cross that Budimir met at the far post, calmly directing the ball into the net.
Shortly afterward, Marco Pašalić had an excellent opportunity to double Croatia’s lead but was unable to convert. Goalkeeper Livaković also played a crucial role, making three outstanding saves midway through the second half to deny Panama’s attackers.
The score remained 1–0 until the final whistle, allowing Croatia to celebrate an important victory. Zlatko Dalić’s side will play its third group-stage match against Ghana on Saturday in Philadelphia.
Croatia captain Luka Modrić made his milestone 200th appearance for the national team against Panama, joining an elite group of players with 200 or more international caps. Only Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal, 230), Bader Al-Mutawa(Kuwait, 202), and Lionel Messi (Argentina, 201) have made more appearances for their national teams.
