Ante Budimir, the scorer of Croatia’s winning goal in the 1–0 victory over Panama, shared his first impressions after the match and reflected on the importance of the result.

On Panama

“We knew that Panama are a very direct team, with extremely quick individuals who are technically gifted. I think they were highly focused throughout the match. They won a lot of second balls and constantly looked to exploit space behind the defense. They have some really good players, and there is a reason they are ranked among the top 30 teams in the world.”

On the Second Half

“We did not underestimate them. They adapted very well in the first half. In the second half, we increased our aggression, got closer to those second balls, and then the goal came early after the break.

We also had a few counterattacks afterward, especially Marco’s chance, which perhaps could have put the game beyond doubt. Instead, the match remained alive until the end. However, we need to build from this victory. I hope we can learn the right lessons and continue developing the things that are essential if we want to improve as the tournament progresses.”

On Luka Modrić’s Milestone

Speaking about captain Luka Modrić, who made his 200th appearance for Croatia, Budimir said:

“I am happy that we have a captain like Luka. He is a huge role model for all of us in terms of how to fight for and represent the national team jersey.”

On Ghana

“It is obvious that they are a compact and difficult opponent. We still have enough days to prepare properly. A tough match awaits us, just like every game at a World Cup.

First and foremost, we need to focus on ourselves. Every detail matters. Today we handled set pieces well and kept a clean sheet. All of those little details are important for what lies ahead.”

Budimir’s goal proved decisive in Toronto, earning Croatia its first victory of the tournament and keeping its hopes of reaching the knockout stage firmly alive. The striker’s message after the match was clear: use this win as a source of confidence and continue improving ahead of the crucial clash with Ghana.
