Igor Matanović came on for Ante Budimir in the second half against Ghana and made a very positive impression during a particularly demanding period for Croatia. Ahead of the team's departure for Toronto, he was in good spirits.
On getting playing time at the World Cup...
“Of course, it’s easier when you get minutes at the World Cup. Now we move on, and we know Portugal are a strong team. We have to keep their key players under control. Ronaldo can score a goal out of nothing. If we defend him well and execute our game plan properly, we can beat them.”
On Croatia’s attacking approach against Portugal...
“Today was the first time we analyzed them. We still need to go through everything in training and establish a clear plan. We have to be strong and fight. Portugal will probably have more possession because they have tremendous quality in midfield. We must be patient and make the most of our chances when they come.”
On the mood within the squad...
“It took time for us as well, and we weren’t satisfied with our performances in the friendly matches. We responded well against England. We weren’t happy with how we played against Panama, but we won. Against Ghana we were excellent, scored a great goal, and that’s the way we need to continue.”
On the support from Croatian fans in Toronto...
“After the Ghana match, I saw a video on Instagram. It felt just like Germany—Stuttgart, Hamburg, and Munich. The best thing is seeing how much the fans love Croatia. We thank them for their support, and we’ll give everything we have to keep moving forward.”
On feeling pressure after fellow strikers Musa and Budimir scored...
“No. I’d be happy if anyone scores. Of course, I’d love to get on the scoresheet myself, but that comes second.”
On Cristiano Ronaldo...
“He’s my idol. He’s not the greatest footballer for me—we’ve seen now that Messi is. But I watched Ronaldo for many years. He’s now 41 years old, and we have to keep a close eye on him. It’s a great honor for me to play against him.”
On Croatia’s game plan against Portugal...
“We have to be patient. They have tremendous quality in both defense and midfield. I remember the last time I tried pressing Vitinha—it was extremely difficult. We need to stay patient.”
On Croatia’s past successes...
“I remember watching the World Cup final in Russia with my whole family in Zagreb. The atmosphere there was special, and I can only imagine what it was like in the stadium. Of course, we talk about those achievements. I saw the celebrations in Germany and how much people enjoyed them, and that gives us strength too. We appreciate that so many people have come to the United States to support us.”
